OSH 2007 RV-10 Photo Tour

Here's my OSH 2007 photo tour and I will update this page with photos from others as they send them.

Camping Kickoff!

On July 17th, Gary and Bob showed up at the campsites and taped them all off.  I sent my wife over with our camper and flew over to bring her back.  If you remember last year's RV-10 HQ site, we're in basically the same spot, and actually, some of our sites are the same sites.  Very nice location.  We were unable to find contiguous sites for all 17 sites, so below I've illustrated the locations with some photos.  OSH was extremely slow from an airplane perspective.  No traffic arrivals while I was there.  They let me park in Aeroshell square, being a performance show plane and all. ;) The camping area is quickly filling up though in the nice and close areas.  Many registered sites, with no camping equipment on them.  When looking at the sites in the photos, our sites are marked with yellow tape.

RV-10's at OSH 2007

This year we had another similar showing of RV-10's at OSH, with about 20-25% of flying RV-10's showing up.  I attempted to take photos of all of them, but missed a few, so if you have additional photos, shoot them to me and I'll add them here.  We had about 20+ RV-10's show up for the show.  Many of you will find this interesting...if you're flying your RV-10 to the show, and want to hang out with the largest number of RV-10 builders, that's best done early in the week.  By the time I got there on Saturday night, I was at least number 5 to arrive.  The arrivals quickly picked up on Sunday and Monday and by then we had about 13 RV-10's in the HBP (Homebuilt Parking) area, and I think a couple in HBC (Homebuilt Camping) as well.  With the great variety of options and styles of the -10's, everyone had a lot to look over and use as they made their future decisions on how to complete their own.  It was really a great gathering of great people this year.

Hanging at the HQ

Back at Base Camp, the RV-10 "HQ", we had a bit of camaraderie, despite being a bit separated into chunks of campsites.  This years sites filled up extremely fast, leaving us with non-contiguous blocks of sites.  Many evenings people could gather to hang out, and we had a couple of short-notice group meals, cooked by Gary/Brenda and Bob/Susan, with plenty of help from others....and Adrian did bring bags and bags of sweet corn!  At one meal I heard we had 55 people in attendance!  Next year we're already planning to try to get more tightly meshed site locations, and perhaps an extra centrally-located campsite that is cost-shared among the other campers.  This would give us a more central gathering point to help prevent the natural exclusions that come from being separated physically.  As you can see though, the people seemed to be having fun!

Misc. OSH Shots

Although I've tended to take few pictures at OSH, by gathering some photos from others we did have a few OSH photos that I could put together.  If anyone has others they'd like posted, just send them to me and I'll add them to this page for all to see.  These are just a few of ours that we took as we hung out by the plane and walked around a bit.  One of the more memorable experiences was hanging out watching the weather on Scott's 396 that showed storm cells with high winds and 1.5-2" hail moving our way.  Sure makes you feel helpless.  The weather said 90% chance of hail 1.5"...so we pondered that for a while.

Taking to the Skies

Going for flights at OSH is one way to pass some time, share some experience, and have some fun.  Although I vowed NOT to give rides at all this year, I ended up getting out a few times for some special circumstances.  We had an aerial photo shoot of Scott and RaNae's beautiful 104XP, a couple trips out for demos of the Chelton EFIS, a trip to take Abby and Brad for a great "thank you very much you wonderful people" first OSH flight, and then another to take out a crew of 2 independents who were gathering video footage at the show that may end up in a documentary on building your own plane some day.  The key was to try to go in the a.m. when it's cool, because I for one get grumpy and irritable and not much interested in being in the cockpit once I get hot and sweaty on the ground.  I felt bad for missing out on a couple other people I wanted to take, but perhaps next year at OSH we'll have more than just Scott and I willing to haul up a few people.  OSH isn't a great place for convenient rides, however, so if you really want to get up in a -10, your best bet is to either do what most of us do (fly to Oregon for a factory tour and demo flight) or meet up with some -10's at a fly-in like LOE in October.

Photos taken by Scott and Todd Schmidt

Scott's brother Todd has some fantastic photo equipment and while some of these photos were just taken with a normal digital camera for their vacation, we got some awesome aerial photos of Scott and RaNae's plane.  If you haven't met them personally, they're great people and did a fantastic job finishing their airplane with style.  The entire Schmidt gang was fantastic to see at the show.

Mike Abe'ls Experience

My wife Helen and I just got back from OSH/Airventure.  My 4th year attending and Helen's second.
It gets better every year. To quote Dick Rutan, "It is a celebration of freedom."
Besides being the awesome event with airshows, new techno-gizmos, and aircraft displays they had an awesome number of guest appearances like:
Dick,

Chuck Yeager, Bob Hoover, Bud Anderson, James Lovell (Appolo 13), and Steve Fossett.
Lodging and camping still sucks (** Tim's Note:...but, Mike didn't stay with us in RV-10HQ ;)   ), but it is worth the trip . If you are building an RV, the tips and pics that you get from other owner builders alone pays for the trip. See you next year at OSH with my personal RV10.
